What is gastroenterology ?

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. Diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, which include the organs from the mouth to the anus, along the food canal, are at the center of this specialty.

What are gastrointestinal diseases ?

Gastrointestinal diseases affect the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. There are two types :

  • Functional.
  • Functional.

  • Functional gastrointestinal disorders are those in which the gastrointestinal tract appears normal when examined but does not move correctly. These are the most common problems affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), nausea, food poisoning, gas, bloating, GERD, and diarrhea are common examples.
  • Structural gastrointestinal diseases are those where your gastrointestinal tract appears abnormal on examination and does not work correctly. Sometimes the structural anomaly must be removed surgically. Common examples of structural gastrointestinal diseases include stenoses, hemorrhoids, diverticular diseases, colon polyps, colorectal cancer, and inflammatory bowel diseases.

Gastrointestinal therapy :

Gastrointestinal therapy (GI) encompasses many different classes of drugs used to treat gastrointestinal disorders. They can be classified as :

  • Proton pump inhibitors.
  • 5-aminosalicylates.
  • Antacids.
  • Antidiarrheals.
  • Functional bowel disorder agents.
  • Biliary calculus solubilizing agents.
  • H. pylori eradication agents.
  • H2 antagonists.
  • Laxatives.
