Pharmacological properties

- Ciprofloxacin is an antibacterial agent, belonging to the fluoroquinolone’s group.
- It has a potent bactericidal action resulting from its bacterial DNA-gyrase inhibition in sensitive bacteria. It is active on: gram negative cocci and bacillus, gram positive cocci especially meti-s and meti-r staphylococci and some species with intracellular development such as legionella, Chlamydia and mycosplasma.

Ciprofloxacin (as chlorhydrate, 17.5mg).......15mg

Therapeutic indications

Cipro 0,3% is indicated in the treatment of corneal abscess, corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis and blepharitis caused by sensitive germs

Contraindications

- Hypersensitivity to quinolones.
- Hypersensitivity to one of the excipients

Warnings and precautions of use

- Treatment should be stopped since the first sign appearance: eyelids swelling, eye pain or redness.
- Do not prolong the treatment beyond the indicated duration
- The treatment must be stopped since the appearance of first signs of cutaneous eruption or any other sign of hypersensitivity reaction
- In course of treatment, wearing lenses is not recommended.
- In case of concomitant treatment with another eye-drop containing a different active substance, you should instil the two drops with an interval of 15 minutes.
- In case of excessive local administration, wash with large amounts of sterile physiological serum.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Data being not available, the use of cipro 0.3% in pregnant or breastfeeding women is not recommended.

Undesirable effects

- Burn sensation, ocular embarrassment, itches, sensation of external object in the eyes, eyelids scabs, crystals or scales, white precipitates which disappear later, conjunctival hemorrhage and bitter taste after instillation
- More rarely:
Corneal stinging sensation, keratitis or keratopathies, allergic reactions, eyelids oedema, lacrimation, photophobia, corneal infiltration, decreased visual acuity, hypersensitivity reactions and nausea

 

Dosage and mode of administration

Corneal abscess
The administration must be applied respecting the following intervals, even during the night:
-the 1st day: 2 drops in the infected eye each 15 minutes, during the first 6 hours and then 2 drops each 30 minutes during the remaining time of the day
-The 2nd day: 2 drops in the infected eye each hour.
-From the 3rd until the 14th day: 2 drops in the infected eye each 4 hours.
-If the treatment exceeds 14 days, your doctor can then adjust the dosage.
Conjunctivitis, keratitis and corneal ulcers:
-The first 2 days: 1 or 2 drops in the conjunctival cul-de-sac in the infected eye (s) each 2 hours when awake.
-After that: 1 or 2 drops in the infected eye (s) until relief of the bacterial infection.
Mode of administration:
- Local route, ocular instillations.
- Do not swallow, do not inject.
- As for all eye-drops, do these operations in the following chronologic order:
1-carefully wash hands
2-avoid touching eyes or eyelids with the nozzle
3-To instil cipro 0.3%, look upward and slightly pull inferior eyelid down.
4-With eyes closed, wipe away the exceeding amount.
5-Close up the bottle after use.
- In case of concomitant treatment with another eye-drop, it is recommended to wait 15 minutes before using it.

Storage

To be stored in a temperature less than 25°C.
Do not use this drug beyond 15 days after the first opening of the dropper bottle.
